Happy New Year!

•January 1, 2014 • 1 Comment

It has been a good year for glass. Lots of great pieces and new experiences were had. I’m going to be revamping my workspace over the next week, and then diving into some new abstract type pieces. Fingers-crossed they turn out well.

I want to thank the newbie followers who have migrated over from the FB page SGA. Delighted to have you. My aim is to be a more frequent poster on here, show more techniques, and experiment more. Suggestions and advice always welcome.

For tonight though, I am couch-bound. Over the previous two days I have pulled the carpet out of my living room, and replaced it with laminate flooring. Including moving all the furniture out and them in. Alone. So… I’m sore, and my hands and knees feel like hamburger. The scary part? Day two is supposed to be worse.

Last piece of 2013…

Christmas again

•December 17, 2013 • 3 Comments

Wasn’t I just writing about christmas commissions? No? huh. Feels like I was.

Here is the current piece:

walker foiled

Like a doofus, I made the top rounded. I couldn’t find a piece of glass long enough for the entire width, so I domed it. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I vaguely remember lamenting about a round piece in my past, lol, and how I was never, EVER, going to do that again. Should have listened to myself.

I’m using 3/8″ zinc to edge it, and am having a hell of a time. i have cut it up into pieces to get around the curve, and I loathe how it looks. Loathe. It. Just before I was going to bang my head against the wall, a little voice in my brain whispered you were supposed to use 1/4″ zinc on the top… easier to bend…

And so it is. Nonetheless I have stepped away for the moment. Having a cup of fake coffee. Posting here. Once this piece is done, I have to whip out a cross for a client. Just a small pink cross with scrolls. It should only take a day. I am hoping this Walker piece will be done by next weekend. Truth be told, I would like it done by Friday night, so I have the weekend to get the cross  done.

Going to try some new thign next year, some abstract pieces. I have several sheets of glass are just beautiful all by themselves. I haven’t been able to find anything that I really want to use them in. So I have decided to try using the pretty piece of glass as the focal point itself, and work the other stuff around it. We’ll see how that turns out.

November 2, caught up

•November 3, 2013 • Leave a Comment

I love that feeling of being caught up.  ArtWalk is over, and I a will start a new project tomorrow (a christmas commission) but for today… I am caught up.

Once again, the governing committee messed up my listing in event guide. It listed my art as Glasswrench studio, and didn’t list that I was pouring wine. The committee didn’t advertise very well either. The event posters were a plain brick red, no art, no color, no imagination. Really disappointing. I doubt that I will pay to participate, again.

I displayed Ganesh, Serenity Amidst Chaos (buddha), Dragonfly on Leaf, Sunflower and Northern lights, all from my own collection. Additionally, I showed Lori’s Lotus, Moonrise, Sunset, Daisies, Sun & Moon, a small dragonfly piece that has no name, Bee, and several crosses. The crosses I did to see how conforming to the regilious bent of the populace would reflect on sales. It didn’t really, lol. Sold one cross. Sold a couple other of the small pieces during the day, as I set up. Ganesh received much more attention that I had anticipated he would. I thought buddha would hog it all, but no.

Received a commission for Sunflowers. I have vacillated between selling the one I have, and making a new one. Last night I had decided to just sell the one I have, it would be totally ok to  let it go. I was considering how I could redo it, I had some cool ideas on how to change up the background, make it more intersting. This morning I have changed my mind. sigh. not sure what to do. if I didn’t like it so dang much, it wouldn’t  matter, but I do. It hangs i the western window of my LR, and there are times when I just sit and view it, with the light blazing in and all the colors and details in the glass are glowing…

Here are two pieces that I did for the event. I totally stole these pattern ideas from another artist. I admit, it. I am most likely going to keep them, so it isn’t really an issue. Or perhaps I am only justifying the theft.

sunrise 2 bright

I cannot decided whether this is a sunrise, or a sunset. I had called it both, alternately. The next piece is surely a Moonrise. The original piece had it over water, but I prefer the mountains, though I am not in love with the glass I used. I need to pick  up some additional hillside greens. I might even change it out.

Moonrise

I LOVE the glass of the moon, love the mottled aspect of it. Pics of the event at set up, with Carla, my lovely helper.

again, long time no type

Hello glass fans!! I have been very absent from the internuts these past weeks. Assorted things going on in my life, good stuff for the most part, has kept me offline. Been working glass like a mad-woman for the past couple/three weeks, as I ramp up for ArtWalk 2013, at my place of business.

full moon rising pattern placement

I decided to be a little less ambitious this year. Two years ago I hung 14 pieces for ArtWalk. Fourteen full-sized pieces. This year the number will probably be the same, but the size of the projects will be quite different, much smaller.

I have also  been doing a lot of copying of other people’s projects. Haven’t had much enthusiasm for thinking up a design, and drawing my own patterns. I have taken some other designs, tweaked them a bit to put my own spin on them, and made those. It is kind of a relief. The two pieces I am working on today are really lovely, and are moving along so quickly, i almost can’t believe it. I managed to cut all the glass for one piece, get the second piece completely ground and fitted, and the first piece about half ground. all in one evening. unheard of.

Moving things around

I recently had the opportunity to purchase some IKEA shelving, the Expedit line, one of the larger ones, the 4×4 cubbies. It might seem grandiose, but i thought it would make a great glass scrap organizer. I have been turning ideas over in my head on how to reorganize my glass. currently, it is stored in milk crates, on an industrial kitchen rack, one of those metal ones. This one is about 15 years old, so it is super sturdy, designed to hold heavy industrial and commercial supplies and cookware. I have two of these and they are workhorses. the racks themselves must weigh 50 lbs. it is an effort for me to move one by myself.

I have devised and discarded several plans, which i won’t go into here. too much explaining. The current rack is sitting at a right angle to the garage wall, so it sticks out… it worked when i initially set it up, but now, it is kind of a pain in the butt. I had planned to move it lie flush against another wall. Then this shelf unit came up for sale and I thought, ooooohhhh, that’ll work great!  Then i took it a bit further and thought since it was such an attractive shelf unit, why not bring it inside?

new glass storage

With that in mind, I painted a wall last weekend, and moved my work table. Even without the shelf unit, I am super happy with the move. I only turned the work table 90 degrees, but I love the new orientation. I am able to look out the sliders to the side porch, filled with plants and bright lights and sleeping kitties, and into the LR, and out into the front yard.

new glass work area

Yesterday, in the midst of running a low fever, some lovely hot and cold sweats, and a little bit of something else i won’t  mention, the shelf unit came home. My wonderful neighbor, A, helped me out. A does these gorgeous mosaic mannequins in glass, but she also paints and draws beautifully. She understands the jones for a new arty toy. Not only did she help me unload the heavy-ass thing, but get it into place as well. AND she went to trader joes and picked up a bottle of cranberry juice for me, while i swooned on the couch.

let there be illumination

Today I set it all up, in between resting and eating and watching episodes of Castle. I had gotten some 24″ flourescent light fixtures, with plug, from a neighbor who was moving out. I mounted those on the wall behind the unit. I ran to OSH and grabbed some daylight tubes, which turned out to be a bad idea. By the time i arrived home I was shaking and sweaty. Fun! A cold shower and two episodes of Castle later, i put in the foam base in all the cubbies, and carried in some glass, just to see how it looked…

it looks AWESOME!!!!

I am so pleased with it. it will take a while to load it all up, but it will be grand when it is all done. For one thing, the glass is filthy with dust. I’ll run up the compressor and use the blow attachment to dust it off before brining it inside. But not today.

Lori’s Lotus

•August 24, 2013 • 6 Comments

I have joined a group on Facebook, Stained Glass Addicts. The people on there are extremely welcoming, supportive and friendly. I asked for some advice on flux and soldering and cleaning and patina. Got a tone of advice. Some of which I used as I finished up this piece.

lori's lotus 1

A friend had posted a lovely photograph on her timeline on FB. And I do love those loti. I created a pattern and did the piece. It turned out well, though I have mixed feelings about it, lol. it isn’t exactly what I had hoped for. it is still great, but… it’s funny how the last several pieces have been such a mixed bag. I was very excited about the small dragonfly piece, and did the poppies as a throwaway kinda thing. I ended up really liking the poppies, but not the dragonfly so much. fickle wench, I guess.

Original photo that Lori’s Lotus is taken from.

Is it counting my chickens before they hatch if I post on here that one of my pieces will be appearing on the back of a glass supplier catalog, if I do so before I actually have the catalog in hand? I have the email saying it was chosen… and I would think that they wouldn’t tell people until they were ready to print, or mail. right?

wrens ganesha complete

So Ganesha will be chilling all over the country in assorted glass work stations and bookcases. I think that is very cool. And so does He, and He’s a God so His opinion counts.

In other news, I will have my photography aid finished tonight. I am making a white screen to hang behind the glass when I photograph it, to help the colors pop. I called around to get quotes on having a pro do it, but it just too expensive. I am hoping that this screen with diffuse the light enough to illuminate the pieces uniformly and correctly. we will see. I’ll post photos when I have them.

I’m having a heck of a time getting decent shots of the colors… I had a plan to take it to a pro photographer, but they want too much money. so I will have to continue to fart around with it. Hope you enjoy. I am so so happy with him.

ah buddha, you are so lovely, with your cool blue and green tones.

buddha background

I am always struck by how dark the glass is while lying down. the circle in the corner is a roundel, darkish blue, and the piece next to it is purple, though here it looks black. His robes will be made form a sheet of glass that was found in an attic a couple houses down from me. The tenant was moving, and they found the old cardboard suitcase full of glass. He said his grandmother had done stained glass til she had a stroke about 40 years ago. It was a little treasure trove. Buddhas robes with be a rich swirled purple and clear with some streaks of periwinkle.

Other sheets of glass, from that cashe, were used for the whale in Hawaiian Fling, and the coral in Peace and Quiet.

The chunk of lime-ish green at his right knee is also old old glass. It is tightly packed with seeds, and is a very delicate green when the light passes through it. This piece will end up with several pieces of my favorite glass in it.

Progress will slow down now for a a few weeks. I am relocating my biz, and will be spending every spare second getting that situation painted and set up to move on the 16th of February. A lot of changes so far in 2013. Lets hope they stay positive.
